Resource Development

"Positioning Your Nonprofit for Fund Raising Success"

This half day workshop for executives, development staff and fund raising volunteers covers the nuts and bolts of establishing a development function in your nonprofit organization. Participants will analyze their organization's readiness in terms of governance, planning, image, visibility, staff qualification, volunteers and infrastructure.

They will learn how to build a development office in a nonprofit of any size, which includes attention to: office support systems, staffing, volunteers, board support, choosing the right fund raising sources and methods for your organization's situation and needs.

Learning experiences include: presentation, discussion, self- assessment.

"Development of Earned Income" (back to top)

This half day workshop is suitable for executives, business managers, development officers, program managers, board members and volunteers working to increase revenue for the nonprofit.

Participants will be better able to analyze if, when and how their organization can and should raise funds through mission related income generation or unrelated business ventures. For organizations already engaged in earned income activities, the workshop will help them evaluate the present initiatives and learn how they can improve results or problem solve, as well as, develop new ventures.

"Getting to Yes!" (back to top)

This half day workshop for executives, fund raising staff and board and fund raising volunteers empowers them to succeed in obtaining contributions from individual large donors.

Topics covered include: understanding donor motivations, researching prospective donors, preparation for the solicitation, getting yes as the answer and follow through cultivation and servicing of donors. Participants gain confidence on how to make fund raising calls through role play.

Other learning experiences include: presentation and discussions.

"Planning for Annual and Major Gifts Campaigns" (back to top)

This full day workshop is aimed at helping executives, development staff, board members and fund raising volunteers achieve greater fund raising success. Participants will be able to evaluate their present positioning for achieving fund raising success.

They will examine the relative priority for strengthening annual giving versus capital and endowment campaigns. A process for planning for annual and major gifts campaigns will be taught.

Learning experiences include: presentation, evaluation exercise, assessment of assets and deficiencies, writing exercises and group discussion.

"Writing and Marketing a Successful Grant Proposal" (back to top)

Executives, development directors and staff and volunteers in fund raising will improve their ability to write and market a fund raising grant proposal to foundations and corporations through participation in this full day workshop.

Topics covered include: overview of proposal writing, preparing the proposals core components, proposal research, approaching foundations and corporations, packaging the proposal and proposal follow up.

Learning experiences include: individual and small group exercises, facilitated discussion and presentation.

Executives, development directors and staff, development consultants, board members and fund raising volunteers will all gain from this full day workshop. They will increase knowledge and skills which will enable them to improve their success in building supportive relationships between their organizations and for profit businesses.

Topics covered include: understanding for profit companies, building relationships with for profit companies, developing a fund raising campaign targeting for profit businesses, and how to write a corporate proposal.

"Cultivating Corporate, Foundation and Large Individual Donors" (back to top)

This full day workshop is appropriate for executive and fund raising staff, board members and fund raising volunteers. Participants will learn about donor motivations and expectations and how to match them to their nonprofits needs.

They will learn the different approaches appropriate for these three donor groups. Experience in writing a fund raising case statement will be gained, as well as knowledge of writing a grant proposal.

The learning experience includes presentation, participant assessment of fund raising capacities, analysis of resource needs, role play, writing exercises and discussion.

This half day workshop for executives, managers and board leaders provides participants with an understanding of organization planning, its benefits in effectiveness & efficiency of mission achievement and introduces BOLD TOP, a planning model developed specifically for the board and staff of nonprofit organizations.

Topics covered include: planning definitions, benefits of planning, mission statement development, the BOLD TOP planning process and how to write outcomes and evaluations.

Staff will be better able to develop outcomes as they write their plans and to establish meaningful, practical evaluation criteria and methods that will measure outcomes.

Governance

"Workshop for Effective Nonprofit Boards" (back to top)

This full day workshop is a research based, replicable, published training program adapted for use with one board or many boards. Board members, prospective board members and staff will understand the roles and responsibilities of the governing board and how to organize the board for effectiveness and efficiency.

Topics covered include: legal duties, roles and responsibilities in the functions of the nonprofit, board/staff relationships and key methods for organizing the board for effectiveness and efficiency.

This program can be presented in modules and can be adapted to concentrate on selected governance issues. Learning experiences include: presentation, self-assessment, small group discussion and exercises, case studies and role play.

Human Resource Management

"Recruiting, Retaining and Motivating Quality Staff " (back to top)

This half day workshop is suitable for senior and executive managers, new executives and emerging managers and board leaders. Participants will have increased knowledge about the importance of the human resource system to mission achievement. They will assess their nonprofits level of development of this system and identify areas needing attention. They will also examine how leadership style affects employee retention and motivation. Board roles in human resources will be clarified including compliance with the IRS Intermediate Sanctions Act regarding compensation. Topics covered include: how to design and implement the human resource system including organization chart, job design, performance evaluation, compensation and working conditions and how these relate to achieving top quality staff. Learning experiences include: presentation, discussion and assessment.

This full day workshop is designed for executive staff and board members, providing them with information about the need for planning for leadership transitions and how to develop a transition plan.

Topics included are: the need for leadership transition planning in the nonprofit sector and in each nonprofit, the roles and responsibilities of the board and executive director in planning for and ensuring successful leadership transitions, steps to development of a plan and components of a leadership transition plan.

"Applied Research as a Strategic Tool for Nonprofit Managers" (back to top)

This half day workshop for executives and managers demystifies research and demonstrates that applied research is a part of effective and efficient management. A research based approach to needs assessment, program evaluation, markets and fund raising as examples can produce information that improves decision making at the staff and board levels.

Topics include: how to identify research questions, how to plan an applied research effort, and a model for a partnership approach with researchers so the end result of the research meets the organization's needs.

Capacity building

"Planning for Capacity Building for Nonprofit Organizations" (back to top)

This full day workshop is designed for executives and board members of nonprofit infrastructure organizations including: management support organizations, national offices of nonprofit organizations and networks, state associations of nonprofits, funders, volunteer centers, higher education, community leaders and leadership organizations, among others engaged or considering engagement in capacity building services for nonprofit organizations.

Participants will be provided with information, a process and tools to help them plan for services or evaluate their present services for continued development.

Topics include: capacity building needs of nonprofit organizations, a brief history of the field of nonprofit management, a taxonomy organizing what nonprofit managers and leaders need to now to succeed, clarifying their market and fitting the topics and delivery systems to the markets, prioritizing development of services and markets and linkage to resources.
